A BRIDGE TO A PERMANENT MUSEUM

Delaware has some of the oldest volunteer fire companies in the country, but no public museum where residents can see that history up close. The Delaware Historical Fire Society is working to change that. Since 2025 we’ve gathered apparatus, uniforms, badges, photographs, and records that tell the story of firefighting in the First State, and our goal is a permanent museum to share them. That building is still years away, and the collection shouldn’t have to wait.

That’s why we’re launching Rescuing Our History, a campaign to build Delaware’s first Mobile Fire Museum. We’re converting a retired walk-in rescue truck into a traveling exhibit, with display cases, interpretive panels, and video, so visitors can step inside and see our history for themselves. Once completed it will travel to fire company open houses, schools, and community events across New Castle, Kent, and Sussex Counties and Wilmington.
